Swamp
Ever since early pioneers began moving through the southeastern United States, swamps have bared the undeserved scarlet letter of impediments to progress and civilization. Defined as temporarily flooded woodlands of low relief these soggy lands are unsuitable for agriculture and provide little resource for modern material or industrial needs. Feared, loathed, and ostracized by the general public, swamps prove to be one of the most misunderstood and undervalued ecosystems in the world.
For the last two years Mac has worked in the lowlands of South Carolina and Florida documenting the enigmatic and subtle pulse of life in these secluded areas. He has come to understand swamps as intrinsically vital areas to maintaining the already compromised hydrology of our springs, rivers, grasslands, and marshes. He is drawn to these areas because nowhere else does the abundance and interconnectedness of life seem so overt and yet so fragile.
