Between a Gator and a Hard Place

Between a Gator and a Hard Place

Francis Beidler Forest, Harleyville, South Carolina, USA. The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) and the yellow-bellied slider (Trachemys scripta scripta) share an interesting relationship. Both cold-blooded sun-seekers, they search out warm places to sunbathe. While the alligators frequently predate on the turtles, they seem to reach a neutral place on this log in Four Holes Swamp. Still, the turtle keeps a watchful eye. For this image I mounted my camera to the log and hoped that alligators wouldn't clumsily knock it into the water. With an polarizer and an intervalometer I took a picture every ten minutes and returned later in the day to retrieve my camera.
