Francis Beidler Forest, Harleyville, South Carolina, USA. In the swamp, snakes like this red-bellied water snake (Nerodia erythrogaster) look for breaks in the canopy during the day to sun themselves. Feeding mostly on fish and amphibians, it's rare to see this snake out of the water. Luckily, this red-bellied water snake was cold enough to pose while I photographed him. I used an off-camera flash to light the foreground.
