An endangered species, the red cockaded woodpecker delivers food to its chicks in a longleaf pine in St Marks National Wildlife Refuge. The diet of a RCW consists of about 80% ants, which they forage under the bark of longleaf pines. Their cavities are surrounded by pockets of sap that they keep activily producing by pecking at the holes. Pictured here is a helper bird, which is an unpaired male offspring of the parents from the previos nesting season.
